Neben Arabern und Berbern, die den größten Einfluss auf die Entstehung und Veredelung anderer Rassen hatten, ist die dritte wichtigste Rasse der Andalusier. So hatte diese Rasse einen großen Anteil an der Entstehung des Friesen, des Frederiksborgers, des Kladrubers, der Connemaras und der Welsh Cobs. Auch die meisten amerikanische Pferde stammen vom Andalusier ab; die Konquistadoren brachten ihre Pferde ins Land. Außerdem beeinflusste der Andalusier seine Blutsbrüder, die anderen spanischen Pferde, ganz enorm.

Der Andalusier selbst stammt vermutlich vom Berber ab. Vor der Eiszeit war die Straße von Gibraltar eine Landbrücke zwischen Spanien und Afrika, über die die Pferde vermutlich ins Land kamen. Später herrschten die Araber in Spanien, dabei vermischten sich die einheimischen Pferde, die Sorraia-Ponys mit den nordafrikanischen Berbern. Das Sorraia-Pony stammt wahrscheinlich vom Przewalskipferd und dem Tarpan (s. beide Ursprung des Pferdes) ab, es sieht diesem sehr ähnlich. Sie waren die ersten Pferde, die in Europa domestiziert wurden. Die Ponys haben ein Stockmaß von 1,20m bis 1,30m, große, konvex gewölbte Köpfe, gerade Schultern und viele Merkmale des primitiven Pferdetyps, zum Beispiel Zebrastreifen, Aalstreifen, eine falbe Fellfarbe. Sie sind sehr zäh, hitzeresistent und leichtfuttrig.

Während der Araberherrschaft vermischten sich diese Ponys mit den Berbern, irgendwann zwischen 711 und 1492 entstand die Rasse des Andalusiers. Das Besondere an dieser Rasse ist ihre Ausstrahlung. Sie haben ein sehr freundliches Wesen, sind aber gleichzeitig temperamentvoll und sehr mutig. Sie werden auch heute noch zum Stierkampf eingesetzt, das zeigt, wie unerschrocken sie die Befehle ihrer Reiter befolgen. Ein weiterer Vorteil dieser Rasse sind seine Gänge. Das Pferd wirkt leicht und stolz, seine Bewegungen sind frei und schwungvoll. Der Schritt ist sehr rhythmisch, der Trab hoch und besonders schwungvoll, der Galopp sehr langsam und weich. Die spanischen Pferde werden häufig für die Hohe Schule ausgebildet, da ihre Gänge, ihr Körperbau und ihr freundliches Wesen sie dazu geradezu prädestinieren.

Der Kopf des Andalusiers ähnelt häufig dem des Berbers, er ist sehr markant, oft ramsnasig. Der Hals ist recht kurz und sehr kräftig, er wird sehr gut getragen und trägt damit zum natürlichen Gleichgewicht dieses Pferdes bei. Die Pferde dieser Rasse haben oft einen kurzen Rücken, mit runder Kruppe und tief angesetztem Schweif, die Hinterhand ist extrem stark mit großer Biegungsfähigkeit in den Hanken. Das ist die wichtigste Voraussetzung für die Hohe Schule. Sie haben gut geformte, trockene Beine mit kurzem Röhrbein und einem schönen Fesselgelenk. Die Hufe sind gut geformt und sehr hart. Ein Markenzeichen des Andalusiers ist der lange, volle Schweif sowie die lange, wellige Mähne.

Meistens sind die Andalusier Schimmel oder Braune in allen Schattierungen, es kommen aber auch getupfte Pferde und Schecken vor. Von den alten andalusischen Blutlinien stammt die Färbung des Appaloosas ab.

Caballos de Pura Paza Espanola (eigentlich fälschlicherweise Andalusier*) sind echt klasse Pferde! Meine totalen Lieblinge! Ob es an ihrem Körperbau, ihren Hälsen, HH, Langhaar, Gängen oder einfach nur an Dem Charakter liegt, ich weiß es nicht.
Dieses und letzes Jahr hatten meine Schwester und ich das Glück, 2 solche tolle Pferde reiten zu können, richtige "Cracks". So hat sich einer meiner größten Träume erfüllt und ich hoffe, bald selbst einen PRE zu haben!
